Board member and chairwoman of the No Hate in Our State Committee, Charlotte Ferguson, organized a team to participate in the Mississippi Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Out of the Darkness Walk on September 10, 2016. The walk’s goal was to bring the community together to shed light on suicide awareness and prevention.
The walk offered participants an opportunity to make friends, find emotional support and build community while raising funds for education, advocacy, research and support programs for those impacted by suicide. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. In Mississippi, suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for ages 15- 24. Veterans comprise 22.2% of suicides.
August 24, 2016– MRC hosted its first public forum in Bay St. Louis. Candidates where US House of Representatives, 4th Congressional District, Mark Gladney (D) and Ric McCluskey (Libertarian Party) spoke and took questions from attendees.
MRC member and Program Director of Faith in Women, Ashley Peterson, spoke about her organization’s efforts to provide women with education on the full spectrum of reproductive choices and involve community faith leaders in supporting women in their choices.
We discussed MS voter ID laws and registration, our upcoming March for Progress voter registration drive through the Delta, the AFSP suicide prevention walk on Sept. 10, efforts to counter hate group activity in our state and our ongoing efforts to advocate for state flag change.
MRC President Lea Campbell spoke in Hattiesburg at a fundraiser for LGBTQ advocacy group, the Spectrum Center, about the need for social progress and equal civil rights for all Mississippians in order to foster economic progress and improved well-being in Mississippi.
